Isla Martin from Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins
Isla has always been my favorite of Stephanie Perkins’ characters and I relate a lot to her shy hopeless romantic personality. I’m so glad Perkins chose Isla for the third book and she was given her opportuity to shine.
Tally Youngblood from Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
I can actually remember the first time I read Uglies way back when and I immediately identified with Tally. I highly doubt I’m actually anything like her, but I guess I like to think I am. Or maybe I just want to be like her when I grow up.
Nathan from Deposing Nathan by Zack Smedley
While I don’t relate to every piece of Nathan’s story, I did find myself in some of his character. Nate struggles a lot with his bisexuality and how it fits into his faith and religion. These are two things I have also had to figure out, and seeing it in a book was one of the most amazing things ever. This has been one of my favorite stories of the year so make sure you read my full review.
Violet Alden from The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner
Oh, the series of my heart and childhood. For whatever reason, young me thought there was something so romantic about living in an old forgotten boxcar. I could never get enough of these siblings and their mysteries, but Violet was always my favorite. Her shyness and love of animals was, and still is, my brand.
Caroline from The Goodbye Summer by Sarah Van Name
This was the book my high school self needed. The season I’m at in my life now isn’t reflected in Caroline, but high school me definitely is. If past me had been able to read this book it definitely would have saved me from so much wasted time and heartbreak and shown me that I am worth so much more. Make sure you read my full review because this is definitely not a story you want to miss.
Marin from We Are Okay by Nina LaCour
I really think this was the first book I read that gave such an honest and raw look at depression. The entire time I was reading it I just kept repeating to myself “this is me.” Nina LaCour’s characters are really all relatable in some way, but Marin has definitely been the one I’ve seen the most of myself in.
Tell me, what character do you see yourself in?

Marin’s depression was very profound. I hope you are getting help if your depression is that bad. I really had a hard time this week because I love characters as they are written but they are obviously not as complex as a real person (me) Characters like me, a bit

I had a hard time too for the exact same reason. It really took me a few hours to even come up with these six. Thankfully, my depression isn’t as bad right now as it has been in the past.

Haha I love your description of how you romanticized living in a boxcar. I”m sure the realities wouldn’t match up, but as kids, who cares?

It is so nice to see more LGBTQ+ representation in books. I, too, love finding characters I can relate to in that way.

I’m so happy to see Nathan on here! I personally didn’t have a lot of trouble piecing together my bisexuality with religion, so I guess I identified more with Cam, but it’s so so good to hear that Nate’s story was resonant for you. Seeing yourself in book characters is honestly the best feeling. ❤
