Eight Books You Should Be Reading This Summer

If you’re somebody that gets a lot of free time during the summer, then it’s the perfect opportunity to get in some extra reading! I’ve put together a list of eight books that are perfect for the (hopefully) lazy summer days ahead of you.

I can’t really explain why, but I love when main characters work in gift shops over the summer. The Goodbye Summer by Sarah Van Name resonated with me so deeply and was the book I wish I had in high school. Read my full review then add it to your TBR!

Summer is all about the romance for me and The Boy Next Story by Tiffany Schmidt is so perfect. It has a great slow burn and some even better family themes thanks to a wonderful set of sisters and parents. Read my full review of this fun light read!

Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan has probably been shoved at you already, but I’d be doing a disservice to everybody if I didn’t include it on this list. Lou is a messy bisexual icon and her coming-of-age story is one that can’t be missed. This is a hilarious story and you can read my full review here.

Stealing Home by Becky Wallace is everything you could possibly want in a contemporary novel – a strong female protagonist, swoony love interest, supportive best friend, summer vibes, perfect writing, and baseball. I really can’t think of a more perfect summer read than this one. Read my full review to find out more.

If more baseball romance is what your summer needs, and trust me it is, then Whatever Life Throws At You by Julie Cross won’t disappoint. I read this when it first came out almost five years ago and I haven’t been able to get Annie and Brody out of my head. Read my full review!

You'd Be MIne

Annie and Clay are the pinnacle of summer perfection. You’d Be Mine by Erin Hahn has my entire heart and I know it will capture yours too. It’s the perfect combination of being so fun while still dealing with some incredibly important issues. My full review has way more reasons about why I love this story!

Graphic novels are some of my favorite things to read. This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki is a heartfelt coming-of-age story that is full of self-discovery. It’s actually one of the first graphic novels I ever read and it will always have a special place in my heart.

No summer reading list is complete without a travel book. Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E. Smith is such a fun adventure. The characters are endearing and the journey they go on is truly special. This is an especially fun one because instead of it being a long car drive it features a cross-country train ride.

What is your favorite summer read? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I love reading these even when I’m not participating (I just published another author interview on my blog instead). You might want to take a look – Jane Davis is an amazing author!

  2. I love reading graphic novels, have had This One Summer on my tbr for a while. Hot Dog Girl just looks like the perfect feel-good book. Usually, I read a lot of thrillers during summer, which is what most of my TTT list consists of, along with some audiobooks I’m excited to listen to.

  3. I didn’t realize there were so many books about characters working in gift shops over the summer. I can see how that would provide a lot of fodder for storylines, though. Tourists can be super interesting….and so can retail life!

    My TTT.

  4. Hahaha I feel you about the gift shop thing. I love reading books where the character works in an ice cream shop over the summer, and I don’t know why??

Anyway, fab list! Hot dog girl is definitely one I want to pick up!
